Is My Package Eligible for a Carrier Refund? A 4-Step Check
Most shipments are not eligible for a refund, and the carriers are content to leave it that way. The ones that are eligible sit behind four conditions, and all four have to hold at once. Here is the test, in the order that saves you the most time.
Here is what currently carries a guarantee, straight from the table we keep current:
| Carrier | Service | Guaranteed? | Claim window | Refund basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UPS | Next Day Air EarlyUS domestic time-definite, money-back guarantee. | Yes (money-back) | 15 days | Base transportation |
| UPS | 2Nd Day Air Am2nd Day Air A.M. is guaranteed; plain 2nd Day Air is not. | Yes (money-back) | 15 days | Base transportation |
| UPS | Worldwide Express PlusIntl is the most-suspended segment; the guarantee flips on/off by lane and date. Verify coverage for the specific origin country and ship date before filing. | Yes (verify lane and date) | 15 days | Base transportation |
| UPS | 2Nd Day AirStandard 2nd Day Air lost the guarantee. | No | n/a | n/a |
| UPS | Ground SaverGround family / 3 Day Select / Mail Innovations are not guaranteed. | No | n/a | n/a |
| DHL | Express 9DHL Express MBG covers only the time-definite EXPRESS 9:00 / 10:30 / 12:00 products and refunds the premium paid (not the full charge). Lane restrictions/suspensions are common, verify the lane and date were covered before filing. | Yes (verify lane and date) | 14 days | Time-window premium only |
| DHL | WorldwideExpress Worldwide / Economy Select are day-definite (end of day), no time-of-day money-back guarantee. This is the typical China-factory service, so most factory shipments are watch-only, not claimable. | No | n/a | n/a |
1. Was it a service that carries a guarantee?
This is the filter that settles most parcels in one look. A money-back guarantee lives only on time-definite services, the ones that promise a specific time of day. UPS Next Day Air and the 2nd Day Air A.M. variant qualify. DHL Express 9:00, 10:30, and 12:00 qualify. Everything day-definite, Ground, SurePost, plain 2nd Day Air, DHL Express Worldwide and Economy Select, promises a day, not a time, so a late one has no refund behind it.
If your service is not in the covered rows above, you can stop here. The remaining steps only matter for shipments that passed this one.
2. Did it actually arrive after the committed time?
Pull two timestamps: the committed time the carrier promised, and the actual delivery time from tracking. A refund exists only when the actual is later than the commit. A package that felt slow but still landed inside its window is not a claim, and filing on it just burns goodwill with the billing desk you may need later.
3. Is the claim window still open?
This is the condition that quietly kills the most valid refunds. The clock is 15 days for UPS, 14 days for DHL Express, counted from the later of the scheduled, tracking, or proof-of-delivery date. Inside the window, an eligible miss is money waiting to be claimed. One day past it, the same shipment is worth nothing. The window is short on purpose, and it runs whether or not anyone is watching it.
4. Was a standing exception in force?
Even an eligible, late, in-window shipment is not owed anything if a standing exception applied: weather, a peak period, or a declared service disruption. These suspend the guarantee, and they are not always announced. Rule one out before you file so the claim holds up.
What passing all four is worth
Clear all four checks and the transportation charge (for UPS) or the time-window premium (for DHL) is refundable, and it comes back to you in full. You stay the account holder of record the entire time. Nobody takes over your account, and nobody takes a cut to collect it for you.
When you are ready to file, the steps are short: how to file a UPS late-delivery claim and how to file a DHL Express money-back claim. For the bigger picture of which carriers owe what, start with carrier refunds, explained.
The only genuinely hard step is the third one: catching an eligible miss while the window is still open. That is the part we watch for you. Point your shipments at us and we flag the ones that failed a guarantee, with the claim prepared, while there is still time to file it.
